The deadline is approaching to register for the Alaska Science of Reading Symposium, organized by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development and Region 16 Comprehensive Center, a program of SERRC in partnership with Education Service Agencies in Oregon and Washington. The deadline to register is April 15.
Symposium keynote speakers include Dr. Tracy Weeden, Ed.D., president and CEO of Neuhaus Education Center, Dr. Heidi Beverine-Cury, Ph.D., co-founder and Chief Academic Officer for The Reading League, Dr. Carol Tolman, Ed.D., literacy consultant, Dr. Carey M. Wright, Ed.D., Mississippi State Superintendent of Education, Dr. Jessica Swain-Bradway, Ph.D., Executive Director for Northwest PBIS Network, and Dr. Michael Johnson, Ph.D., Commissioner of AKDEED. There are networking opportunities and breakout sessions in addition to the keynote sessions. Check out the agenda here.
Another opportunity is the Alaska Science of Reading Leadership Academy, a free online course for Alaska school leaders offered by Education Northwest and AKDEED.
Targeted at principals and other school leaders, the eight-session course will focus on how to support teachers with a variety of literacy leadership strategies. In addition to the eight one-hour sessions, there are two one-hour community of learning sessions.
There are only two cohorts available with 25 spots each, May-June or June-July 2022, and participants can earn two free credits. There’s still room, but it’s worth filling out the interest form soon.
