Angela
Alaska Learning Labs Participant
Northwest Arctic Borough School District

Alaska Learning Labs delivers supplemental educational services via Local Service Providers in out-of-school programs. Fourth-grader Angela improved her reading and math skills along with gaining confidence in her academic skills under the tutelage of a local school teacher.

Hired, trained and supported by Alaska Learning Lab staff, the teacher worked with several students in need of academic support. AK Labs provide  students with individualized learning plans, incentives, healthy snacks, and Family Nights designed to engage family members in the learning process.

Kevin Marsh
Individual Technology Learning Plan (ITLP) Participant
Fairbanks Northstar Borough School District

A fifth grade teacher, Kevin Marsh (pictured sitting at computer) was one of 35 educators from 16 districts who participated in the Individualized Technology Plan program designed by SERRC’s Technology Team.

Kevin wrote, “I think I have begun to see the future of education for all students in Alaska.  This process takes the educator from the classroom into the virtual world and allows them to connect to students in a medium they are already immersed in : technology By instructing teachers on how to use technology to engage students, this program is a win-win for all concerned.”

Letha
The Learning Connection Program Participant

Single mother Letha participated in SERRC's family learning program and youth employment services. This spring, Letha finished the five GED tests. Her essay about building a better life through education for both herself and her son earned Letha a scholarship to the University of Alaska Southeast. She plans to pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education and work with young children.

Letha wrote, “I will not let being a young mother keep my son or myself from having a better future - one that begins with me having a career to support him. While I know each step will be progressively harder, each step brings me closer to my goal.”
